The Florida Multi-Sector Generic Permit (MSGP) is the main tool for implementing the NPDES program at industrial facilities. It sets statewide requirements for managing stormwater discharges across sectors such as manufacturing, recycling, warehousing, and transportation. Facilities with industrial stormwater discharges must develop a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), apply best management practices (BMPs), and conduct inspections and monitoring as required. Obtaining MSGP coverage activates NPDES oversight, ensuring pollutants like oils, metals, and chemicals are properly controlled.
To maintain Compliance:
- Maintain a current Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and keep all permit records accessible
- Implement, inspect, and maintain all required BMPs to prevent exposure of materials to stormwater
- Conduct routine facility inspections and document findings and corrective actions
- Monitor stormwater discharges as required and keep accurate sampling records
- Manage materials, wastes, and spills properly, and complete required reporting and permit renewals
If your industrial site has activities that could come in contact with participation and contaminating stormwater runoff, you may need MSGP coverage. The permit groups different type of facilities into 30 sectors based on your industry. Your sector gives you a general idea of what stormwater checks you need to do and the basic BMPs you should have in place to maintain compliance. Please find a list of the industrial sectors below.
