KCI | Environmental Compliance and Stormwater Management

Do you know Your Sector?

Your industrial activity is determined by a specific Multi-Sector Generic Permit (MSGP) relevant sector that defines the requirements and regulations for discharge of stormwater runoff into local water bodies. Stormwater runoff can pollute local water bodies if rain comes in direct contact with any exposed materials and industrial activities.

Stormwater discharges associated with industrial activity may require coverage under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program. KCI has a trained team who can identify areas where industrial activity may be exposed to stormwater and can help you apply for permit coverage through a Notice of Intent permit if required.

The MSGP will contain limits on what you can discharge, monitoring and reporting requirements, and other provisions to ensure that the discharge does not hurt water quality or people’s health.

Florida’s NPDES stormwater program regulates all industrial activities that meet the following criteria. The following statements below are directly from the State of Florida NPDES website:

The eleven categories are defined using both narrative descriptions of the activities and Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. The categories are further separated into twenty-nine unique sectors that groups business establishments by common industrial activities and similar pollutants.

EPA has developed a fact sheet for each of the twenty-nine industrial sectors regulated by the MSGP. Each fact sheet describes the types of facilities included in the sector, typical pollutants associated with the sector, and types of stormwater control measures used to minimize the discharge of the pollutants.

If there is any uncertainty about whether your facility falls within a particular sector, you can contact KCI for assistance in helping you make the determination. Once we define the sector, and evaluate your facility, we can then establish your facilities eligibility for MSGP coverage.

The next step is to produce a quality Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). This is a detailed document that will define the actual stormwater pollution activities that occur around your facility so we can develop and implement site specific pollution prevention measures, or best management practices (BMPs), to eliminate contaminated stormwater discharges.

Material handling and storage, equipment maintenance and cleaning, and other activities at industrial facilities are often exposed to the weather. KCI can help you implement cost saving environmental best management practices to prevent hazardous conditions from stormwater exposure so we can keep our waterways clean.  Contact us today, 888-346-7779.
