Stormwater Inspector Gadgets

Some of you might recall the comical animation series in the 80’s called Inspector Gadget.  Inspector Gadget was a fictional crime fighter and awkward person with cyborg like characteristics.  The animated show involved several police department associates like his nice Penny who was behind the scenes along with his trusting dog Brian by his side.  And most noteworthy, he had unique and precarious, yet mishandled gadgets hidden in disguise.

Unlike Inspector Gadget, a KCI field stormwater inspector actually uses specific gadgets with precision and accuracy.  To do so, it takes a great organization behind the scenes and teammates by their side to help solve the tough environmental problems encountered every day.

All land-disturbing activities that disturb 1 or more acres or are part of a larger common plan of development are required to be covered under the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), Construction Generic Permit, (CGP).   The CGP is the state of Florida’s issued NPDES construction stormwater permit required prior to land disturbance.

The CGP requires an inspection by a certified and trained stormwater inspector every 7 days or within 24 hours of a storm of 0.5 inches or more in rain. The disturbed areas of the site such as material storage, vehicle entrances or exits, and various erosion and sediment controls that were identified as part of the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) must be inspected.

The state of Florida requires certified inspectors perform inspections on all the erosion and sediment control measures in the approved plan. The mission is to ensure these measures have been properly installed and maintained, that erosion is being controlled, offsite sedimentation is being prevented, and no turbidity is being generated in receiving waters.

During the construction development lifecycle, all erosion controls must be in good operating condition until the construction site is in the final stabilization phase.  To ensure this is the case, the stormwater inspections are required through-out the life of a construction project and are designed to help identify areas out of compliant and may need to be addressed.

A KCI certified stormwater field consultant and inspector always has the resources and gadgets on hand to achieve success.  A customer-oriented organization behind the scenes and a fully trained team from operations to field management to call upon as needed.

KCI works hard to train our field inspectors to effectively use their gadgets to fully execute the mission.  There are specific gadgets needed to perform a great field stormwater inspection.

  1. Technology such as laptop, tablet, and unique software to electronically record compliance reporting and tracking.
  2. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to ensure maximum safety in the field.
  3. Unique office supplies to address SWPPP site map alterations and various field documentation changes.
  4. Turbidity devices to help measure the cloudiness in local area waterbodies.
  5. A company vehicle always maintained to ensure on time arrival.

All KCI employees are certified stormwater professionals.  Hire us and watch us use our gadgets in action!
