Spring is in the Air!

Spring in Florida typically runs from late March through May.  Spring for many people is the time of year to spruce up, spring clean, and get outside.  Springtime in Florida is the perfect time to do things considered outdoors.  The temperatures are typically milder in the spring which provides the perfect time to relax and enjoy the many amenities that Florida provides.

Many developers have open excavated land ready for vertical construction. Nearby communities’ outdoor activities can potentially be disrupted at a moment’s notice by dust storms from local development if not properly maintained during this time of year.

Most of the year, the climate of Florida is humid subtropical.  During the springtime in Florida, we will begin to experience tropical rainfall that can be heavy at times.  However, springtime in Florida is also considered the driest.

Dust is a familiar sight on large construction sites during this time of year.  Construction sites can create large areas of disturbance generated by excavators, demolition activity, and heavy equipment tracking.  These activities can produce large open land spaces where the slightest of wind can kick up a high degree of disturbing dust.

Dust can often reduce workers health, safety, and potentially can be harmful to the environment. There are many dust control actions that a site developer or contractor can implement to minimize dust on a construction site. There are three that are most common.

  1. Ground or vegetative cover wherever possible is the most productive. In areas of a construction site where there will be minimal vehicle or heavy equipment traffic, a vegetative cover will reduce the winds’ ability to kick up sediment particles and potentially dust.
  2. When groundcover is not an option, there are other excellent alternatives like implementing a water truck with large tank capacities.  This method is particularly useful for controlling dust during and after the ground being disturbed during site development or grading.  Spraying water by utilizing a water truck until it is moist can be a very effective control of dust.
  3. There are also a variety of dust control suppression systems like large commercial grade sprinklers available on the market that are excellent for smaller disturbed land areas.

Conditions on construction sites can constantly fluctuate with the seasons. KCI’s commitment to keeping our clients compliant is our top priority. Have a question about how to manage stormwater on your construction site? We would love to hear from you. Contact us today at 888-346-7779
