Sediment Suffocates

Sedimentation run-off can create costly damage to our waterbodies. An abundance of sedimentation leaving a construction site can create less capacity for water in streams, rivers, and lakes causing a higher propensity for flooding.  If not adequately maintained and frequently checked, sediment can quickly fill the construction sites stormwater drainage systems such as culverts, inlets, and discharge points resulting in costly maintenance.

Land development activities can negatively affect the natural process for stormwater to appropriately absorb into the ground.  When a construction site quickly exposes the disturb soil to surface stormwater runoff, an immediate transformation takes place in how stormwater would naturally flow.  It is so important for construction teams to effectively control erosion and sediment.  If unchecked, it can cause considerable damage economically and to our precious ecosystem.

An effective stormwater management plan can assist in maintaining and controlling sediment and erosion.  A couple of effective systems that can be considered are retention and detention systems.  Retention systems slow down the stormwater and allows it to absorb overtime into the soil.  A detention pond performs the function of collecting stormwater like a pond, and gradually releases the stormwater reducing the water flow volume and minimizing or eliminating any sediment to be released.
