Our Warming Planet

Climatologists state that the increase of heavy, intense thunderstorms is part of a changing weather pattern due to a warming planet. The statistics also state that more rainfall is expected due to the warmer atmosphere that will accelerate evaporation of our lakes and oceans. Therefore, the more evaporation, the more precipitation from thunderstorms that is triggered by increase temperatures.

In Florida, over the past 10 years or so, we have begun to experience longer summers that are warmer and humid. Conversely, the winter seasons in Florida are becoming shorter with less rainfall. Climate change involves long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and other atmospheric conditions. In many regions, including Florida, there have been observable shifts in weather patterns over the years.

Population growth and economic development is still on a fast pace here in Florida.  Records state that Florida saw a 1.9 percent population increase from 2021 to 2022. With an average of 300,000 people moving to Florida each year, will continue to put tremendous pressure on Florida’s landscape by stimulating more and more construction.

With more construction, more average yearly rainfall, and less natural land for the water cycle to perform effectively, we all will need to continue to place an emphasis on stormwater management and regulations. Given the observed changes in weather patterns, particularly in Florida, effective stormwater management and regulations have become increasingly crucial.

Stormwater runoff carries pollutants into water bodies, affecting water quality. Florida’s Construction Generic Permit (FCGP) places in motion stringent regulations and effective stormwater management practices that are essential to minimize the impact of runoff on rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. This involves the implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) to control and treat stormwater before it enters natural water systems.

KCI is excellent at monitoring and managing stormwater regulatory requirements on behalf of construction sites. Call us today on 888-346-7779.
