Detention or Retention

What is the difference between a retention pond and detention pond? The two types of ponds are usually categorized as stormwater management ponds, and often are referred to interchangeably, but they are not the same.

Retention ponds are wet and therefore contain water, while detention ponds simply hold the water temporarily and are usually dry. We often hear them called either a ‘wet’ pond or a ‘dry’ pond.

A retention pond is a manufactured pond or basin designed to collect and hold stormwater runoff from surrounding areas. The purpose of retention ponds is to provisionally detain and treat water to prevent flooding and erosion during heavy rainfall. This will improve water quality by removing pollutants before the water is released back into the environment. Retention ponds typically have a permanent pool of water and a designated area for vegetation.

A detention pond is a structural stormwater management design to manage and control the flow of water during heavy rains. Detention ponds are typically used to temporarily store rainwater runoff from impervious surfaces (such as parking lots, roads, and rooftops) before slowly releasing it into nearby streams or rivers. This reduces the risk of flooding, erosion, and water contamination in local water bodies. These ponds are typically vegetated and designed to remove pollutants from the water before they are released into the environment. You will find detention ponds mostly dry unless during a heavy storm.

Both retention and detention ponds provide valuable benefits for wildlife habitat and in some cases aesthetic value to local communities and roadways. One key area of importance is that both retention and detention ponds do require regular maintenance to maximize their functionality and advantage. Sediment and debris can accumulate over time, reducing storage capacity and decreasing the effectiveness of pollutant removal. In addition, excessive plant growth can cause clogging and reduce the efficiency of the pond.

Many times, during the final construction phase, it is quite possible to see Integrated stormwater management practices such as retention and detention ponds incorporate green infrastructure type stormwater management solutions.
