Protecting your Perimeter

Any well-fortified area starts with a sound and solid perimeter.  We all have learned that fortified means strengthened or protected. Think about an old historical fort and how the strong perimeter provided protection from harm or danger. History has taught us how large and tall walls were first used as a primary defensive measure to secure and protect a community or area.

Just like a strong wall protecting a historical fortress, construction sites must equally protect its perimeter. Not necessarily from intruders or being invaded, but from erosion and sediment from becoming exposed outside the perimeter. Stormwater management is one of the many priorities facing land developers, contractors, and home builders.

Stormwater can quickly travel over the exposed land from a construction site and pick up contaminants and sediment.  Specifically, sediment from a construction site can significantly impact surrounding waterbodies.  A new developing construction site must first think about the perimeter and other best management practices (BMPs) to control and eliminate erosion and sediment leaving the construction area.

There are various best management practices (BMPs) commonly used for erosion, sedimentation control, and stormwater management that may include and not limited to the following:

  • Silt Fence
  • Inlet Protection
  • Erosion Control Blanket
  • Street Sweeping
  • Hydro-Seeding, Sod, and Mulch
  • Wetland Mitigation Planting
  • Floating and Staked Turbidity Barriers
  • Slope protection
  • Project phasing
  • Polymers
